COMPOUND WALLS AND FENCES

The first thing you do when you have acquired land is to build a compound wall to secure it with a wall or fence. While not essential, it does indicate to others who may want to temporarily “squat” on your land, that it is occupied and soon to be built on.

With a average Gambian compound being approximately 20m by 30m you have 100metres of boundary to fence or wall and a gate to add.

Listed are the various fence types build in Gambia. We have listed them in order of their cost to erect.

PALM FROND AND TIMBER FENCE

This fencing  is a cost effective method to mark your land and let others know that it is owned and currently under development.
This is mainly for country areas where the sticks and fronds are available in the nearby forest.
>Usually less than 1 metre high.

STICK FENCE

A stick fence is a bit more substantial that the palm frond and timber wall and is where thick sticks are wired together to form the wall. The sticks can be from the nearby forest or bought in.
Usually less than 1 metre high.

3 STRAND WIRE AND WOODEN POST FENCE

A more contemporary looking fence, consists of wooden posts with 3 or 4 strands of taut wire nailed to it. Often a vine is grown over it to give a solid vegetative wall.
Usually less than 1 metre high.

MESH WIRE AND POST FENCE

A more secure and solid wall than the previous ones, it is build by erecting posts (usually steel picket posts) into a line along the boundary 3 to 4 metres apart and unrolling mesh and wiring to the posts. It forms a solid fence that is hard to get over by its flexible nature. Often vines tare grown over it o make it more secure.
>Usually less than 1 metre high, but can be made double height to over 1.5m high.

PREFORMED CONCRETE WALLS

Preformed concrete walls are made from pre made concrete sections and posts that are cast to join together. They build a wall quickly on site, but need to have a factory area to precast them. Usually bought in from manufacturer.
Solid and up to 1.5m high.

BLOCK COMPOUND WALLS

Most town land has 2metre high block walls around the perimeter.
This gives privacy and security to the compound.
>We build our block compound walls from block made of sand and cement. These blocks are usually made on site to reduce transport costs and easy of movement.
We put down a shallow footing to build on and build the walls with piers every 4 metres which have concrete poured into them with a steel bar to reinforce.
A solid or see through security gate is also a feature of the front.
